Spirit ran his large herd through the canyon.His four week old foals,Angel and Thunder,were running alongside him.Angel then galloped ahead,jeering to her brother,"Come and catch me!"

Thunder was laughing so hard."I can so catch you!Thunder is faster than angels!"He laughed as he galloped ahead of his sister and father.Lifting his head to look up,he seen his father's friend eagle above his head.

"Nu-uh!"Angel shouted."Angel's have wings!Thunder is just a sound!"She then tried hard to catch him,and almost had him when Spirit called for them to come back.

Angel smelled a rank smell all of a sudden."eww!"She said as she ran back to her dad.She then said,"Dad,Thunder's farting and lying!Make him stop!"Spirit laughed out loud at her comment,Because it reminded him of how silly he used to be.

Spirit stopped,for he realized the situation was no longer funny.They were inside a deep canyon,and it would be easy for any predator to take them,but it was the only way to the summer grounds without passing the army camp.A chittering sound echoed around the canyon.Spirit's eagle friend,Linka swooped down and in and landed on Spirit's shoulder screaming,"Katarna!She is coming!Her pack has many this time!"Spirit's eyes shot up."Where how far?"Before she could answer,a long mournful howl sounded,sending shivers down the herd's spines."Run!"Spirit shouted.

Thunder widened his eyes.He had never dealed with a situation this bad.Looking amongst the pack,they were larger this time.As he seen his sister take off,he did as well.Rain was not preganate,or weak so she would fight.She stood alongside Spirit.

Spirit was scared.His mother and her "beloved",Temon,had gone on ahead to scout and would not be back for a long time.With out her to guide him,at this point,he was lost.He had never endured this situation before.Katarna had attacked,but never with allies!She wanted them all.'No!' Spirit thought.'Rain and I tried for to long to have a family, and I won't let them go now!'He reared up,hooves piercing the skies.Katarna and many other wolves lept upon him,knocking him to the ground.Fangs tore at his hide,and the remaining wolves took off after the herd,who panicked and began to run."Not so high and terrible now are you mustang?See how I,with my brothers,am stronger than ever?We shall let you live,yes,but your herd,I think not.And just to make sure you don't regenerate your herd...."She hissed the last part,inching towards his hindquarters.Spirit thought for a second,before realizing what she wanted."Katarna!No!"He squealed.He attempted to get up,but the other wolves dug their claws deeper into his flesh.There was nothing her could do.But as Katarna came closer......

Rain,seeing Spirit she screamed.She had never been in a situation like this before.Hearing the wolves,she blinked and was surrounded."HELP!"She screamed.Wolves jumped on her and pinned her down,clawing out.All of a sudden a large stallion jumps out and looks at the wolves.He reared,teeth showing."Well well well,Katarna haven't i told you a hundred times stay away?"The stallion snorted.

Katarna's eyes widened and she dropped her prize.She bowed her head."Great Abaccus,We only seek to stop your growing numbers so that the deer shall become rounder and I can feed my pups.But from what I've seen so far this stallion has a high rate for breeding multiply."She knew she would be in great danger for lying,and seeing he wasn't accepting it,tore the wolves away running with her.You could hear them groaning in the background.Spirit rose."Thank you stranger."

The older mare was helping some of the younger mothers feel better.Spirit galloped up to her."Mom,meet Abbacus.He saved Rain me and the foals."Esperanza looked into the newcomer's eyes.Her heart instantly leapt and said,'Strider!'But he soul said no.
