He wants the horse to listen only to him and enjoys a challenge when riding a wild horse to show off how he can brake them so easily. He is always ready for a challenge and does have a temper. He'll stop at nothing to brake a horse. The Colonel always tries to listen to those high up than him. He know that is he does the job right, he always gets something in return.
