Rain slept peacefully,and she was beat.Even the sounds of spirit's hooves in the grass did not wake her up.The run from her village to here was long.She couldn't imangine how spirit lived so far away.

Spirit sniffed the air.A strong,dense smell entered his nostrils."Wolves."The Midnight pack.a dangerous group that would kill any horse alive.He hated to wake poor Rain,she would need her rest,but this was serious.He bugled,awakening everyone.

"Don't worry.They will not take you over my dead body."He snarled.His eyes flared as harshly as any wolf."If anything were to happen to me anyway,others would be there to protect you."His voice softened and kindled as he nuzzled her again."I would hope that if anything did happen,my loving mate would tell my story to my son or daughter,so they might share it with theirs."

Spirit smiled at her encouragement."Sadly,I may not be strong enough.I am only one horse,and strength comes in numbers.Let's go now."Spirit said as he shuddered,for the smell was growing.He would make sure she did stay at his side.

Spirit's heart thudded behind his ribs.He had assisted in a battle against Katarna before,but only once and assisted only.But he would not let her die.Not now.She would die at his side,an old mare.He noticed her weakened state,and prayed to Equus that she wouldn't deliver upon bloodshed.

Rain helped gather the herd up ad walk away.Once she could hardly smelll the scent she smiled to spirit.

Rain laughed at spirit.Sometimes he was serious but sounded funny.She nuzzeled him and wondered where they would go next.
