On a cool morning, the sun was just rising over the mountain tops. The ground was still wet with dew. On the edge of the woods laid a beautiful young mare. Her buckskin coat shined with every little bit of sunlight that hit it. She lay still and quiet, hoping someone would come a long soon to help her. But feared that the next horse would bring more danger to her. She had been on the run for about 10 months now. Her reason was because she was pregnant. She was force bred and had to get away from the small herd of wandering stallions. They were a ground of stallions that traveled together. They were the outcast of herds that did not want another stallion in them, or the lead stallion felt threatened and kicked them out. They were always happy to get a mare or filly in their sights. The always respected other herds. They never want to cause trouble, but they just can't control themselves around a new mare or filly. The young mare had wandered away from her herd. The Bronius herd. She always wandered and loved to. But when she had left about 11 months ago, she did not expect to be forced breed. Nothing like this had every happened in her life. And know she knew why some of the horses in her herd had not want to breed right away. She looked out across the valley. Her white blaze shining in the sunlight and her sock stood out against the cool green grass. Her name was Jade. She stayed by the tree, tired, cold, and hungry. And afraid for her life. Then she saw a horse in the distance looking in her direction. Chills ran down her spin as she curled up closer to the tree and lowered her head.

She saw that the horse was looking at her. Then she noticed that it was a stallion. She began to shake violently. That stallion looked a lot like the one back in that wandering herd. She started breaking out into a nervous sweat. She lifted her head and looked around. Making sure there were no other stallions near by. If there were, she would be in danger. Along with her unborn foal. She started to try to get up, but it was difficult with the extra weight within her. She struggled to get up.

Spirit moved slowly towards her.He saw her struggle, and knew she needed help.If he didn't do something soon, she might hurt herself or get away from him.He whinnied a surrender cry, telling he meant no harm.He also used surrender gestures."Hello."He said."I am Spirit, leader of the Cimarron herd.Son of Strider and Esperanza.Who are you?"

Jade stopped struggling and sighed in relief that it wasn't the stallion she thought it was. She stayed down. "My name is Jade," she said. She looked at him in surprise when he said Strider. "Did you say Strider," she asked puzzled.

"Oh," she said. She really didn't want to bring herself to say what needed to be said.

"Will you come to the Cimarron? You will be safe there."He offered, though he was already harboring his half-brother,stepfather, and his brother's herd.

"Thank you," she said. "Your help is greatly needed," she said as she tried to get up. She felt the foal within her kick. She winced.

She got to her feet and breathed deeply and then sighed. "Thank you," she said. She looked around making sure that those stallions had not come. "So, your a son of Strider," she asked.

"I did, my name's Jade," she said. "I'm the daughter of...," she trailed off. Might as well get it out in the open, she thought. "I'm the daughter of Strider," she finished.

"Half-sister," she said. "I'm only part mustang. My mother is a thoroughbred. She is no longer wild. She is a calvary horse. It's been that away for two and a half years now. I'm in the Bronius Herd. Well, not in now a days, but mostly welcomed. I like to wander from them every now and then. I have not seen them in over 10 months." She winced again as the foal kicked her side. "I'm sorry for the way I acted before. I thought you were that horrible buckskin stallion from that Hai herd," she said. "I've been trying to get way from them for 10 months now." She looked at her belly, noting how big it was.
